An open-source, audited, multi-channel measurement methodology that integrates seamlessly into your ESG reporting.
A holistic measurement of your ecosystem based on the latest industry standards.
Measuring the carbon impact of our digital services: how does it work ?
The 3 main emission sources are data centers, transmission networks and user equipment.
In each case, our methodology accounts for 2 emission categories:
– Operational emissions: energy consumption across the full digital infrastructure
– Embodied emissions: emissions generated in the material extraction and manufacturing process of the infrastructure
Every digital activity consumes energy: data is stored on servers, transmitted over networks, and displayed on the user’s device. We measure this energy based on the volume of data transferred, then convert it into CO₂e according to the carbon intensity of electricity at each stage. The result: an accurate footprint of your digital activity.
CO2e emissions measurement
Lifecycle of a media campaign
Optimizing for carbon efficiency speeds up page load time: a mere 0.1 second gain that can boost your conversion rate by 8%.
Estimate your webpage carbon footprint and benchmark against the average of pages we audited.
Our audits cover the measurement of the following channels:
-Social media (TikTok, Meta, Snapchat, Pinterest, LinkedIn, YouTube)
-SEA (Google Ads, Bing)
-Retail media (Amazon, Walmart, Loblaws)
-Programmatic
-OOH & DOOH
-Connected TV & linear TV
-Radio
-Print
footsprint’s open-source, cross-channel measurement methodology is independently audited and aligned with major international standards and frameworks:
Offline & digital media: Global Media Sustainability Framework (GMSF v1.2), GHG Protocol, SRI, ADEME, Ad Net Zero, IAB Europe.
Web eco-design: AFNOR, RGESN, Sustainable Web Design Model (SWDM v4).
Creative production: ISO 14067 and PAS 2050.
Footsprint develops actionable performance indicators that can be directly used by media teams, such as:
– Carbon cost per click
– Carbon cost per conversion
– Carbon cost per 1,000 impressions
– Carbon cost per dollar/euro invested
This approach makes environmental impact an actionable media optimization criterion, helping teams improve campaign efficiency while reducing their carbon footprint.
Absolutely. Carbon data is available through our proprietary SaaS platform or can be directly integrated via API into your existing reporting solutions.
Web eco-design combines carbon footprint reduction with an improved user experience. Optimizing website efficiency can also improve page load times: a gain of just 0.1 seconds can increase conversion rates by up to 8%.
Our methodology assesses the energy consumed by digital activity, including data transferred, requests, scripts and file sizes and converts it into CO₂e based on the carbon intensity of electricity at each stage.
The methodology accounts for 3 sources of emissions across two categories:
Operational emissions: Energy consumption generated during the use of digital services.
Embodied emissions: Emissions associated with the extraction of raw materials and the manufacturing of infrastructure and end-user devices.
